Speaker 0 00:00:01 Good morning. You're listening to the daily cat. Your morning news brief from WMUR news. I'm your host, Alex Harrison. It's 9:00 AM central time on Tuesday, January 25th, 2022. Here are the headlines to start your day. The us Supreme court unanimously revived a lawsuit Monday that accuses Northwestern of violating federal law in its handling of employee retirement plans, the suit, which was originally filed in August, 2016, claims the university violated the employee retirement income security act by imposing high fees and poor investments on employees' pension plans. The seventh circuit court dismissed the case and May, 2020, but will now reconsider it. Following the Supreme court's ruling, Chicago public schools is facing another big shakeup. As two more leaders announced their departures, interim chief education officer Maurice Sweeney will resign and chief health officer Ken Fox will retire both effective in February. These departures are only the latest in the young administration of CPS CEO, Pedro Martinez, who took on the job only four months ago, Illinois COVID hospitalizations are on a steady decline. Speaker 0 00:01:10 According to new data published by the department of public health, 5,238 patients are currently hospitalized of which 905 are an intensive care. Both figures are at their lowest since late December, 2021. The seven day average of new cases fell to 25,052. The lowest figure since January 4th, the Pentagon ordered 8,500 us soldiers on heightened alert. Monday as tensions continue to grow with Russia over the nations troop build up along its border. With Ukraine, Pentagon, press secretary, John Kirby said the soldiers would be deployed to NATO member countries in Eastern Europe in order to deter Russian president Vladimir Putin from ordering an invasion of Ukraine a day earlier, the us state department ordered all family members of American personnel at the embassy and Ukraine's Capitol Kiev to leave the country immediately. The James Webb telescope reached its final position. Monday 1 million miles above the earth surface. The $10 billion observatory was launched from French Guiana on Christmas and will be the most powerful space telescope ever used once operational. It will take several more months of calibration, however, before it can begin its primary mission of observing distance, stellar and atmospheric phenomena as far back as 13.7 billion years ago, that's all for today's daily cat from Evanston, Illinois.
